For over 20 years I have been captain on the Boeing 737.
Before that, I worked as first officer for the same company.
Before I started flying and teaching here, I have flown for a small commuter airline and for the Royal Netherlands Air Force, making the air a place where I often work, for more than 36 years.
Retired at Transavia Airlines in The Netherlands, I'm happy to continue flying for Smartwings, in the Czech Republic, still as captain on the Boeing 737.
Firefighting related
Just having celebrated my 35th year as a member of the local fire departement, I have seen many different things in the fire and the safety field.
As a team we operate to create a survivable situation for both humans and animals.
The fire departement is still learning. We will always find new- and mostly better ways to do our job in a safe way.
The Dutch fire brigade consists of 85% volunteers and 15% professionals.

Boarding passengers with reduced mobility or PRM's.
When we made the Advanced Boarding Lift Equipment, we had only one thing in mind:
passengers with a handicap should be brought on- and off board in a much more humane way.
In making and using this hoist, we also were able to greatly reduce the impact on the employees carrying.

My projects
Alway busy with work, from the point of safety. From early on I have realized that you cannot perform in any field, without being safe.
You cannot help someone else, if you are not safe yourself.
That has been the core in helping others, whether is learning about aviation, whether working as a fireman to solve a situation, whether working as a first responder.
Always safety first.

The safety that I try to show, also shows in how I work with people and materials.
It's important for me that, at the end of the day, people are satisfied. Having learned, having thought, having acted.
I notice that the interpersonal relations are giving good feelings to the participants, that in return gives me a lot of energy.
As a very nice result: that increases the joy of everyone.
